Dad with Trout
Fly fishing- Weston, Vermont, August. Difficult assignment: 75 degrees... Overcast... No wind... No fish. We dusted off the jokes about Traveling Salesmen. Finally, we had to slip out a couple worms totally against Wantastaket Trout Club Regulations. For the photo I resisted the obvious use of a Fish-Eye lens. You know how fishermen love to tip the scale!

Keep Clear
Self Portrait. Art Center College of Design, 1977. I have always maintained that education is confusing. A slow learner, I am always befuddled. This was about the time Scientology and EST were in hot contest for claiming Nirvana on Earth. With these transcendent ideals in the back of my mind, I was determined to see if my roommate's cool new Nikon F3 could meter GE Cool White Deluxe off loading zone concrete. I tried to stay out of the way, and take responsibility for my actions. Ahh, but I was in the Loading Zone...

Bummer Squad
Silver gelatin print. My first Rock Concert in California. California Jam at the Ontario Motor Speedway. All the greats of 1973 and every kid in Southern California. The Eagles were bored and put out. Black Oak Arkansas was rude. We baked in the sun breathed dust and God knows what else. The sound was horrible and you couldn't see the stage. The bloom was off the Rose for the Flower Power Generation. Better Living Through Chemistry was doping us into sacrificing the few virgins we had left.

Paul and Kim Paul and Kim were pregnant and wanted a portrait 'Au Natural'. With Paul in a full leg cast I could not pass up the opportunity to make this image. Their daughter Kenna is a teenager now. Paul and Kim do not see much of each other. And because their marriage did not work I have felt oddly compelled to keep this wonderful image in a cool dark place. This has always bothered me because I am still fond of the image and the people in it. Life does not go in straight lines.

Sex Ed 1965
Personal work. This sort of imagery comes from the gray matter usually while driving, and sticks fast in a gray area. In health class in 1966 I did not get the physics of Sex Ed, what I did get was fuzzy old logic. Images that did not work. The teacher would speak softly about the father planting a seed in the Mother. Our Minister would invoke the "Hand of God" or the "four corners of the Earth" which they told us in School was round. Eventually the Dogma most certainly ate my homework. And I got this Idea for a "photograph". Thank God!

Yosemite Store
Yosemite Store, April 2001. A new image for my Aftermath of Ansel Adams Series. This one is Number Six. Native Americans who lived in Yosemite considered it a sacred place in nature. The physical grandeur of Yosemite holds a special allure for Photographers. I came up here to experience Ansel Adams spirit and take a fine art Digital printmaking seminar at the Ansel Adams Gallery. And yet I find myself in the store shooting snowball globes on the shelf, hand held, flash on camera with a consumer digital camera and scratching my head.

Inkjet Cartridge SO20110
Nothing I have consumed over the years has infuriated me as much as this ingenious block of plastic. The prints from the Photo EX are more satisfying than photographic prints, the control I have is extraordinary. It shoots a drop of ink the size of a red blood cell across a wire that charges it with electrons; carefully guiding it's flight onto the paper. I buy them in fives and tens. Yeah, at twenty bucks a pop. I chuck them into the trash every time my computer tells me it is "empty". It is as degrading as voting in the state of Florida. I finally lashed out with a Craftsman seven inch slotted screwdriver and performed this ritual dissection, chanting softly, "I know you are not empty, you ecologically repugnant lying piece of trash! "

More is better
Chinatown Retail interior, San Francisco, January 2001. Primitive digital. These shots are from Nikon 990 captures. Don't kid yourself these digital cameras we have now are primitive. Way. But in the art of primitive photography we revere qualities produced by technical failures. The excessive noise and soft image capture compliment this primitive retail thematic display. Should I explain this? What are tourists looking for? Does this pricing strategy work? Could these critters actually be worth seven bucks? Should I buy, say, ten of them? What are they thinking? Am I missing something? Do I really need to explain this?

Greenwood Meadows
Words just simply fail me as far a Greenwood Meadows goes. What were they thinking?

Katy
This is my Wife, Katy, and the Mother of our children Elizabeth and Roger. This image however predates progeny. There is something in the making of the portrait that belongs to the photographer and subject much like a performance belongs to the musicians. There is a great fluid plasticity to this act of making photographs, and it allows for the spirits of you and your subject to join. I like the fact that her eyes are closed, though ironically her eyes are most beautiful. Katy was just being her great self. There are some great eyes-closed photos out there and this is one of them.
